Working in Sweden in 2026

Sweden is a magnet for skilled workers in tech, engineering and healthcare, with famously good work-life balance. From 1 June 2026, new rules apply: a work permit requires a salary of at least 90% of the Swedish median wage, and applicants staying up to a year must show comprehensive health insurance. The job offer must also match Swedish collective agreements or industry norms.

Main visa & permit routes

The right route depends on your qualifications, job offer and salary. Here are the principal options — we'll confirm which fits you.

With a Swedish job offer

Work Permit (employer-sponsored)

The standard route. From 1 June 2026 your gross salary must be at least 90% of the national median wage — a minimum of about SEK 33,390 per month (the median used is around SEK 37,100). Terms must match Swedish collective agreements, and short-stay applicants must show comprehensive health insurance.

Highly qualified graduates

EU Blue Card

Sweden also offers the EU Blue Card for university graduates meeting a higher salary level, with EU-wide mobility benefits and a route to long-term residence.

Salaries & cost of living

Swedish salaries are solid and pay equality is strong, though income tax is relatively high and funds excellent public services. The minimum salary for a 2026 work permit is noted above. Stockholm and Gothenburg have higher living costs, particularly housing, so we help you budget and find a soft landing.
